What is Reiki?

Rei (ray)

Reiki is a natural healing therapy developed in the early part of the 20th century by Mikao Usui in Japan. It has shown to stimulate gently yet deeply the body’s natural ability to heal itself. As a non- body work healing system, Reiki is naturally a safe and non-invasive treatment, adapted to anyone from new born babies to the elderly, animals and all other living being. The practice of Reiki has been self-regulated and approved by the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) acquiring National Occupational Standards and is available within the NHS as a complementary therapy.

Ki (kee)

Reiki is the Japanese word that literally means “universal life force energy” and is pronounced “ray- key”. Channelled through the practitioner hands to the receiver, this universal energy works on all levels of being: mind, body, emotion and spirit, balancing and harmonising them to their pure state.
Treatments with Reiki has shown to reduce stress, encouraging relaxation and bringing balance within the body thus helping to cope with all life situations. Reiki can be safely used in conjunction with conventional medicine and/or other complementary therapies and helps any conditions or ailment with very positive efect on the immune system, producing a total feeling of well-being.

Q: What might I feel during a Reiki session?

A: You may sense warmth, coolness, tingling, or sometimes nothing at all—any of these responses are perfectly normal.

Q: Does feeling more mean the session is more effective?

A: No. Reiki flows exactly where and how much you need, like a battery charging only to full. The effectiveness isn’t based on sensations.

Q: Can emotions or images come up?

A: Yes. Emotions, colours, lights, or images may surface to be gently processed and released. This is part of clearing blockages.

Q: How should I approach the session?

A: Simply relax, stay open to whatever arises, and enjoy the sense of clarity and harmony the treatment brings.

Q: How long is a Reiki treatment?

A: The first session lasts about 1.5 hours and includes an initial interview about your lifestyle and medical history. Follow-up sessions usually last around one hour. Please arrive on time—after a 20-minute delay, the appointment is cancelled and still due.

Q: How many sessions do I need?

A: There’s no fixed number. Everyone is different, so trust what feels right for you. Some people feel complete after a few sessions, while others enjoy regular monthly treatments for ongoing balance and relaxation.

Q: Are there any side effects?

A: The most common effects are calmness, harmony, and an overall sense of well-being. Some people may experience a brief “healing reaction,” which helps the body release old energies and restore balance. Beyond that, Reiki is generally associated with positive effects only.

After Care Recommendation

I recommend keeping your schedule free after a Reiki session so you can integrate the experience and enjoy the deep relaxation it brings. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol, drugs, or other intoxicants, as staying hydrated and clear supports your body in releasing toxins and stagnant energy.
Most people leave a session feeling calm, balanced, and mentally clear. Others may feel refreshed and energised while still grounded. Occasionally, the body may choose to release old energies it no longer needs. This can show up as temporary tiredness, feeling cold, or moments of emotional release. If this happens, simply be gentle with yourself and allow the process to unfold—these sensations usually pass quickly.
